Emily Cartmell, Osteopath.

Passionate about the principles of osteopathy, Emily uses logic to analyse anatomy in three dimensions. She is British, trained in the UK and has practised osteopathy in New Zealand for 10 years. Prior to her Osteopathy career Emily studied at Durham University,
UK (2001 – 2005) where she obtained an integrated masters degree in Chemistry. She then worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a few years.

A chemistry degree trains your brain to understand, analyse and apply concepts to things you can not see. It also trains you to visualise structures in three dimensions. Emily uses this training to apply osteopathic principles to a three dimensional understanding of musculoskeletal anatomy.

During an osteopathic assessment Emily creates a mental picture of what is going on in the person’s musculoskeletal system and uses this to understand where in the body is the cause of the problem. The root cause may be in a different place than what might be
expected and the effects may be more than what the person feels.

Emily uses predominantly more gentle osteopathic techniques and does not do any ‘clicking’ of joints. She treats anyone aged 10 and above.

Emily initially became interested in understanding the human body when doing a 500 hour yoga teacher and yoga therapy course (London 2007-2009) in the tradition of the renowned teacher, T Krishnamacharya. In 2013 Emily completed her integrated masters
degree in Osteopathy at the European School of Osteopathy (2009 – 2013) in the UK and then moved to New Zealand where she worked at three different clinics over 10 years. She still enjoys continuing to study and understand yoga philosophy. Emily is also a keen dancer and has done different types of dancing over many years, most recently Cuban salsa.
